Container Basics

5 questions

Shipping containers are large, standardized metal boxes designed for transporting goods by ship, train, or truck. Made from strong, durable steel, they're built to withstand harsh weather, heavy loads, and the rigors of international transport. At Simple Shipping Containers, we specialize in sales, rentals, and custom modifications of these versatile structures for storage, workspace, housing, and more.

We offer containers in various lengths: 10ft, 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, and 53ft.

10ft Containers: Perfect for smaller storage needs, but note they cost more than 20ft containers since they must be cut from larger containers in the US
20ft & 40ft Containers: Our most popular sizes, available in both standard height and high cube (extra foot of height). These are the most cost-effective options
45ft Containers: Available but at a significant price increase over 40ft containers
53ft Containers: Available but typically cost 2-4 times what a 40ft container costs - you can usually buy 2-4 40ft containers for the same price as one 53ft

For most applications, 20ft and 40ft containers offer the best value.

Exterior Dimensions:
  • 20ft Standard: 20'L × 8'W × 8.5'H (6.06m × 2.44m × 2.59m)
  • 40ft Standard: 40'L × 8'W × 8.5'H (12.19m × 2.44m × 2.59m)
  • 40ft High Cube: 40'L × 8'W × 9.5'H (12.19m × 2.44m × 2.89m)
Interior Dimensions:
  • 20ft Standard: 19'3"L × 7'7"W × 7'10"H (5.87m × 2.31m × 2.39m)
  • 40ft Standard: 39'5"L × 7'7"W × 7'10"H (12.01m × 2.31m × 2.39m)
  • 40ft High Cube: 39'5"L × 7'7"W × 8'10"H (12.01m × 2.31m × 2.69m)

New (One-Trip) Containers: Used only once to transport cargo from the factory. Pristine condition with minimal wear, no dents, and like-new appearance.

Cargo Worthy (CW): Previously used for shipping but certified for continued cargo transport. Good structural condition with some cosmetic wear. While the price difference between Wind & Water Tight and Cargo Worthy is minimal, the quality difference is often very significant.

Wind & Water Tight (WWT): Structurally sound with no holes or leaks, but may show cosmetic damage and not certified for cargo transport. Though priced similarly to Cargo Worthy, these may have more wear and cosmetic issues.

As-Is: Budget-friendly option with visible wear and possible minor damage. Still functional for storage but may require repairs for specific applications.

With proper maintenance, shipping containers can last 25-30 years or more. The lifespan depends on factors like climate, usage, and maintenance. Containers in harsh coastal environments may rust faster, while those in dry climates or with regular maintenance can last even longer. We recommend periodic inspections, keeping drainage clear, and applying rust-preventive coatings when needed.

Delivery & Setup

5 questions

Delivery methods depend on the location and their delivery partners. Most commonly:

20ft containers: Delivered on a rollback tow truck
40ft containers: Delivered on a 40ft tilt deck trailer
Drop shipping: Comes on a hotshot flatbed. In this case, the customer will need to arrange for unloading (20ft can be unloaded by a tow truck, 40ft requires heavy equipment like a crane or front loader). We can assist with finding these resources if needed.

Space requirements vary by container size:

20ft containers: Minimum 60ft of clearance from the back edge of where the container will sit
40ft containers: Minimum 170ft of clearance from the back edge of where the container will sit
• Clear access path: 12ft wide minimum
• Overhead clearance: 15-16ft (for power lines, trees)
• Level, firm ground (no soft soil or steep slopes)

Our delivery team will assess your site and recommend the best placement method.

Permit requirements vary by city, county, and intended use. Temporary storage on private property often doesn't require permits, but permanent placement, dwelling conversions, or commercial use typically do. We recommend checking with your local zoning office or HOA. We can provide documentation and specifications to support your permit applications.

Not always. For temporary use, containers can sit on level, compact ground, gravel, or concrete blocks. For permanent installations or modifications, we recommend pier foundations, concrete slabs, or railroad ties. Proper foundation prevents shifting, improves drainage, and extends container life. Our team can advise on the best foundation for your needs.

Lead times vary by location and inventory availability. For in-stock containers in our service areas, delivery is typically 3-7 business days from order confirmation. Custom-modified containers may take 2-4 weeks depending on complexity. Rush delivery may be available for an additional fee. We'll provide a specific delivery window when you place your order.

Maintenance & Care

3 questions

Containers require very little maintenance:

• Monitor downward sloping dents in the roof for rust
• Apply rust-preventive coating to any affected areas
• Keep drainage channels clear
• Ensure doors operate smoothly and locks function
• Check foundation remains level

With minimal care, containers can last for decades.

Containers are made from Corten steel, which develops a protective rust layer that actually slows further corrosion. However, in humid or coastal environments, additional rusting can occur. Regular inspections, keeping drainage clear, and applying rust-preventive coatings help prevent significant rust damage. New or well-maintained containers can last decades with proper care.

Yes! Shipping containers are designed to be stacked 9-high when fully loaded (up to 192,000 lbs per container). This makes them incredibly strong and capable of handling heavy snow loads without issue. Ensure your container sits level and has proper drainage to prevent water pooling on the roof.

We provide detailed quotes after discussing your specific requirements. Many customers start with a basic container and add modifications over time.

Yes! Many customers perform DIY modifications. Containers are made of steel, so you'll need appropriate cutting and welding tools for structural changes. We can deliver unmodified containers for your projects and provide guidance on best practices. Remember to maintain structural integrity and check local building codes for any modifications.

Timeline depends on modification complexity:

• Simple modifications (doors, vents, paint): 1-3 weeks

Rental vs Purchase

3 questions

Rent if: You need temporary storage (construction sites, events, seasonal inventory), want flexibility, or have short-term projects (under 12 months).

Buy if: You need long-term storage, plan to modify the container, want to build equity, or will use it for 2+ years.

Rent-to-Own if: You want flexibility now with the option to own, need to preserve capital, or want to try before fully committing.

Rental rates vary by size, location, and rental duration. Monthly rates vary by container length and location. We offer flexible terms from month-to-month to multi-year agreements. Longer commitments receive discounted rates. Delivery and pickup are included with most rental agreements.

Yes! However, it's important to mention this before having your container brought to you. We typically send a different container for purchase since we prefer not to sell our rental fleet. If you think you may want to own the container, please let us know upfront so we can arrange accordingly.

Uses & Applications

4 questions

Shipping containers are incredibly versatile:

Storage: Personal items, equipment, inventory, vehicles
Workspaces: Offices, workshops, studios, pop-up shops
Living Spaces: Tiny homes, guest houses, cabins
Commercial: Retail spaces, restaurants, coffee shops
Industrial: Equipment storage, job site offices, mobile facilities
Agriculture: Tool storage, livestock shelters, workshops

The possibilities are limited only by imagination!

Yes! Shipping containers are designed to protect cargo during ocean voyages, making them extremely weather-resistant. They withstand rain, snow, wind, and extreme temperatures. Wind & Water Tight grade containers are completely sealed against the elements. For added protection in harsh climates, consider insulation and proper foundation drainage.

Absolutely! Container homes and living spaces are increasingly popular. With proper modifications (insulation, HVAC, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical), containers make excellent tiny homes, cabins, or additional living spaces. Check local building codes and zoning regulations, as requirements vary. We can help design and build container living spaces tailored to your needs.

Yes! Shipping containers offer excellent security features:

• Heavy-duty steel construction
• Lockable cargo doors with reinforced hasps
• Difficult to break into without specialized tools
• Can add additional security (padlocks, lock boxes, alarms)
• Weather-resistant to protect contents

Many businesses use containers for secure equipment, inventory, and valuable storage.
